Rules 101. Gordian knot of cables.

Seems like your worst nightmare comes true – a giant Gordian knot of cables. Unfortunately you are not Alexander the Great and can not sliced it in half with a stroke of your sword. That is to say, you could, yet will it settle the issue? Doubt it…
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against cables or wires! But no matter if it is your power tool or extension cord or 50 foot network cable you keeping “just in a case…” seems like there is only one solution – organize it.

Cheap. Easy to use. Velcro.

I am using VELCRO Brand One Wrap Thin Ties, Black, 8 x 1/2-Inch, 100 Count (91140)
Measure 8 inches long and 1/2 inch wide, comes 100 Velcro ties per pack for about 6 bucks.
Velcro uses a removable & reusable hook-and-loop fabric fastener which can easily be cut or combined to change the length for your needs. Furthermore you can reuse it as many time as you want.

Each tie has a hole punched into one end and as a result it makes very easy to loop & tighten the tie to a cable. After that you don’t have to worry about misplacing the tie while using the tool.

As should be obvious it’s on every cable in my workshop.
I am using it even to hold together 4 of my 24″ Irwin quick clamps!
Not to say about computer cables, gift wrap paper tubes, even my plans tied to support sticks with Velcro ties.

So for just a $6 you’ll get everything you need to keep you cables and wires organized.
No more Gordian knot of cables, problem solved!
